TITLE: The Mystery of the Shroud of Turin: New Scientific Evidence
DESCRIPTION: No cloth in history from anywhere in the world has been so studied as the Holy Shroud of Turin. Nor has any cloth so caught the fascination and reverence of the world. And still it remains a mystery. Is the Shroud the ancient burial cloth of Jesus providing in its linen fabric the story of His death and Resurrection? Is it a clever medieval hoax of Leonardo da Vinci? What do modern DNA tests reveal regarding the apparent blood stains on the Cloth? Are there images of flowers and pollens on the cloth that trace its history? How were the mysterious images created? Can modern forensic pathologists identify the body of a crucified human supporting the words of the New Testament and weapons and wounds used by Romans soldiers on Jesus? These are just a few of the many intriguing questions discussed with slides in this lecture. The story of the Shroud reads like a mystery novel that will intrigue you and increase your sense of awe and wonder as you contemplate the message of this lecture.

11:00 a.m. Rev. Dave Dwyer, CSP
TITLE: Involving Young Adults in the Life & Mission of the Church
DESCRIPTION: We have all heard them say, “Sure, I’m spiritual, but I don’t need to go to church to pray to God.” Catholics between the ages of 18 and 39 make up 40% of the Church today, yet this is a very different generation from those that have preceded them. Many do not practice their faith; fewer than ever know the basics of the tradition; the vast majority live in a modern world that doesn’t resemble the world of the Church at all. However, research and experience show that these young adults hunger for the love of God and a community to call their own. Today’s spiritual seekers are yearning to make the connection between faith and life. How can we help them make this connection, be more responsive to their needs, and ensure that they don’t fall through the cracks of parish life? We will examine some of the things dioceses, parishes, and campus ministries are already doing, as well as “think outside the box” toward effective outreach to young adults in our time.
BIO: Fr. Dave Dwyer, CSP is Director of Paulist Young Adult Ministries, a North American outreach to Catholics in their twenties and thirties. He is the publisher of BustedHalo.com, a daily, faith-based web magazine for young adult spiritual seekers, as well as the host of The Busted Halo Show, a nightly call-in radio talk show airing nationally on Sirius satellite radio. During the show, he answers listeners’ questions about faith and the Church. Father Dave speaks to parishes, dioceses and ministry organizations around the country and in Canada about reconnecting young adults to the Catholic Church. He previously worked in campus ministry at the University of Colorado and the University of Texas. He was ordained a Paulist priest in May 2000, and prior to answering the call to priesthood he produced and directed television programs for MTV and Comedy Central. Popular with students and young adults because of his dynamic and relevant preaching, he holds a M.Div. from the Catholic University of America and a B.S. in communication from Syracuse University.
11:00 a.m. Dr. Susan Blum Gerding, Ed.D.
TITLE: Life-Giving Evangelization Through Ministry of Consolation
DESCRIPTION: Dr. Gerding will present a six-dimension process for Catholic evangelization in general which can be applied anytime, anywhere. She will outline the application of this process in all situations but with a focus on those who are mourning loved ones. The ministry of bereavement provides many opportunities for effective evangelization, and she will provide a step-by-step guide to forming or strengthening a comprehensive bereavement ministry (evangelization team) for your parish!
BIO: Dr. Susan Gerding is a pioneer in the field of Catholic Evangelization and has been active on the local, diocesan and national levels since 1979. She was the Founding Editor of The Catholic Evangelist Magazine (1980 – 1983) and the Founding President of Isaiah Parish Missions (1984 – 2006.) She received the Pro Ecclesia Et Pontifice Medal in 1984, the Paulist National Catholic Evangelizer Award in 1984, and the NCCE Outstanding Catholic Evangelist Award in 1996. After losing two of her four young adult children, Sue became a grief counselor, certified by the National Catholic Ministry of Consolation, and, in addition to thirteen other publications, designed and wrote two grief support group manuals, “Harvesting Our Tears” and “Heart to Heart Evangelization”. She has served as the Chair of the Bereavement Ministry in her parish and as a consultant and trainer for bereavement ministry in the Diocese of Palm Beach.

1:00 p.m. Rev. J-Glenn Murray, SJ
TITLE: He Has Done Great Things: Evangelization and the Eucharist
DESCRIPTION: In the Sunday Eucharist, through the action of Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we are saved and set free and the Father is glorified. There we experience mirabilia Dei, the great things God has done. There we experience God’s forgiving grace, hear God’s saving Word, intercede and give thanks, eat and drink the Body and Blood of the Lord; and through it all, find direction, purpose, and meaning for our lives. Then, we are, as a consequence, compelled to tell somebody somewhere what we have seen and heard. Here is the connection between Evangelization and the Sunday Eucharist. This workshop hopes to explore this connection in inspiring ways.

TITLE: The Challenge of Evangelization
DESCRIPTION: The National Directory for Catechesis calls for a “new evangelization”. This is radical stuff, especially for Catholics!!!
In this workshop, we will look at the challenges posed by this call and the opportunities it affords us to rethink how we go about our ministry. We will explore ways to evangelize our students using resources already available to us. We will also wrestle with the idea of ‘’apprenticeship” as presented in the document.
From the texts we choose, the catechists/teachers who are called forth, the structures we develop, and the students with whom we minister, the call for a “new evangelization” puts everything in a whole new ‘LIGHT’! Come prepared to be involved, to dream a little, and go home with a ‘pack’ of new ideas!
